Ли Lee, Robert Edward, состоявшееся в мае 1864 на севере штата Вирджиния близ г. Ричмонда в районе, который носил название "Глушь" the Wilderness - здесь были глухие леса с густым подлеском. 115-тысячная армия северян под командованием Гранта попыталась обойти армию южан, но Ли, у которого было всего 75 тыс. человек, вынудил противника принять бой. Густой лес мешал и той, и другой стороне, а лесной пожар, возникший в результате артиллерийской стрельбы, усугубил ситуацию. Обе стороны понесли в этой битве крупные потери.
